Am I eligible to claim?

You may be entitled to compensation if all of the following apply to you:

  • You took out a PCP or HP car finance agreement in the UK
  • The agreement was between 6 April 2007 and 28 January 2021
  • You were not informed about the commission paid to the dealer
  • You are (or were) a UK resident when you took out the agreement
  • You were 18 or over at the time

What is a discretionary commission arrangement?

Before January 2021, car dealers could earn more commission from finance companies by setting a higher interest rate on your finance agreement. This is called a Discretionary Commission Arrangement (DCA).

Dealers had a financial incentive to charge you more interest — and you were never told about it. The FCA has ruled this was unfair and has ordered lenders to review all affected agreements.

The Supreme Court ruled in October 2024 that consumers are entitled to compensation — the FCA estimates up to 40 million agreements may be affected.

Frequently asked questions

Everything you need to know about making a PCP claim.

What is PCP mis-selling?
Between 2007 and January 2021, many car finance dealers received hidden 'discretionary commission arrangements' (DCA) from lenders. This allowed dealers to set higher interest rates to earn more commission — without telling you. This is now deemed unfair by the FCA and could entitle you to compensation.
Who can make a claim?
You may be eligible if you took out a PCP or HP car finance agreement between 6 April 2007 and 28 January 2021, and were not informed about the commission your dealer received from the lender. You must be a UK resident and over 18.
How much could I receive?
The average successful claimant receives around £1,100, but the amount depends on the size of your finance agreement and the interest rate applied. Some claimants have received significantly more.
Will making a claim affect my credit score?
No. The claims process involves only soft credit reference searches, which do not affect your credit score and are not visible to lenders.
Do I need to use a claims management company?
No. You can make a complaint directly to your lender for free, or escalate to the Financial Ombudsman Service at no cost. However, if you prefer expert guidance and to have your claim handled on your behalf, Claims Engine can help — on a No Win, No Fee basis.
